Man in a red jacket sitting on a wooden bench in a sunny park

Following art school in Camberwell and Derby. I have made my art in many London studios: Deptford, Stoke Newington, Queens Park and Teddington.

I have exhibited my work since 1990 in London and as far afield as the Inner Hebrides. In addition to developing my own work, I have been teaching art and graphic communication in secondary schools in London since 2002.

I have been commissioned to create watercolours, pen and ink drawings, large charcoal pieces, collages and murals, as well as acrylic and oil paintings. I have also sold a range of prints and made illustrative work for commercial and private clients.

My current intention is to achieve the freedom and expression of a large painting while working on a much smaller scale.

About me

My art and process

My pictures have used a range of different media over time but my current focus is on using oil paints. Working in my studio, I have so far created eight series of very small and small, gestural works exploring light and colour; mostly inspired by landscapes. I start with a drawing, photograph or memory but quickly discard the original source. The painting then develops over weeks, months or even years until I feel totally content with the composition, colours, marks and layering.

Nearing completion of a painting I think about the name using a range of sources. I often look at regional dialects, weather related terms, song lyrics and phrases from recently read books.
